Important Information Related To Psoriasis Important Information Related To Psoriasis September 13 , 2013 | Author: Armand Zeiders | Posted in Education Psoriasis is a disease caused by faulty signals in the immune system of the human body and this is a skin state where skin cells grow very fast. Lesions can occur in this situation because the excess skin cells are not shed and the skin cells pile up. People worldwide can be affected by this skin disease type, which is known as an immune interceded disease. More than seven million people are affected by this disease in the U.S. alone. According to research studies, Caucasians are those who develop the disease more compared to other ethnic groups.

Psoriasis is not contagious and a person can only have this disease when his immune system mistakenly triggers a reaction in the skin cells believing that these are unwanted invaders or pathogens. Over production of the skin cells can occur often on the elbows and knees and also on the feet or even on the scalp. Research done by scientists on the body immune system has shown that a type of white blood cells, the T cells, mistakenly trigger this reaction. This is the white blood cell that fights infectious agents and unwanted invaders like bacteria and viruses. In patients with psoriasis, these cells are working incorrectly.

Pustular and nonpustular psoriasis are the two types of psoriasis commonly observed. The rare type of psoriasis that covers the entire body of the person is called GPP or generalized pustular psoriasis and this is one of the two types. Painful blisters that are filled with pus form on the skin and rather than the plaque or excess cells commonly seen, and this is observed in persons having this rare disease type. This is rarely seen in children but can happen at any age. The more common type of psoriasis is the nonpustular type , and that appears like dry red patches on the skin.

This type of skin disorder can be chronic and often these skin flare ups cannot be predicted. When the skin flare ups happen there is severe itching and pain felt by the person. Cracking skin and bleeding on the skin can also be observed, and this causes a great deal of pain for the sufferer. Drug-induced psoriasis can also happen and there are several drugs that can set off or worsen psoriasis. It is important to determine which type of the disease is occurring, as this can help decide treatment options.

The lesions that occur in psoriasis can vary in appearance, depending on the type of psoriasis. The general symptom can be plaque or patches of thick scaly skin occurring, most often found on the knees and elbows, the lower back, feet , and even the scalp. This can also develop anywhere on the skin, and even affects the fingernails and toenails. People who develop psoriasis can see changes happening in their fingernails, like if these begin to pull away from the nail bed or the nails getting discolored.

Treatment can help in combating this skin disorder, although there is no known cure for this yet. Preventing the disease from progressing can be the goal and this can be done when visiting a dermatologist. Phototherapy is sometimes used as well as the application of topical treatments. One drug used for treatment was made from recombinant humanized monoclonal antibodies, and this drug is Efalizumab. Suppressing the immune response incorrectly happening can be how this drug type works. These types of immunomodulating drugs were developed by scientists who used custom monoclonal antibodies for research and production.
